    Description

ANTIQUE EDWARDIAN ERA BLACK PATENT LEATHER LACE UP BOOTS SZ.5
Up on the auction block is a unique pair of Antique Edwardian Period Black Leather Lace Up Boots with Patent Leather Shoes in about a US size 5. The numbers inside the shafts read as follows:
    36 2 43C78
indicating this could be an EU36, but the sizing is almost a full size smaller. Inside the top shaft of the right boot is a red diamond with stitched writing “
    THE STETSON SHOE
” and in the top shaft of the left boot is “
    Shield’s Boot Shop, Rochester N.Y.
”. The leather is quite fragile and cracking in the patent leather areas of the shoes. Some of the patent leather is missing in spots. The leather uppers are soft, but very brittle along the eyelets and high tops. The external seam work is extremely strong and intact. These boots look to have been worn very sparingly.
The inside cotton twill lining is stained and has a lot of age spotting. There are no rips or tears and the internal seam work looks intact. The leather insoles are in a “NOS” condition and have beige leather heel pads that look almost new. The leather banding across the high tops is in good condition for the age and along the eyelets missing some patches of leather, but again both are quite brittle. There are 18 pairs of internal eyelets to lace up. The leather tongues are in excellent shape with a full complement of wool backing on them.
. The bottom leather soles are almost new and show some of the “Stetson” label with full over soles. The wooden Cuban Heels are very solid, but the rubber caps have hardened and petrified with many cracks in them. These boots would work best as display and décor pieces and not advised for wearing. Regardless, measurements will be provided.
    HISTORICAL NOTES:

    The Stetson Shoe Company
, not to be confused with the Stetson Hat Company, was a big time maker of top quality shoes from 1887 through 1973 when they finally closed the doors to their Weymouth, Massachusetts manufacturing plant. From spectators to spade soles, Stetson made some of the greatest U.S.-made shoes of all the other and still recognizable brands. It should be noted they were cutting edge when Stetson came to styling, especially in the 1940s and 1950s. During this time, they were best known for their long and somewhat pointed lasts. While much of the rest of the U.S. shoe industry was moving toward a more rounded shape, Stetson stayed true to tradition and instead pushed shapes that harkened back to the late 1800s to early 1920s. When you have a pair of distinctive Stetsons, you can tell the maker without looking at the label.”

    The Shield’s Boot Shop
(proprietor Jesse Shields) was a shoe store located in Rochester N.Y. during the 1920s and was considered as one of the more attractive and largest shoe stores in Rochester. While exclusively carrying the “Stetson Shoe” line for women, Shields carried other brands for women as well.”
