Description
One of the most technologically advanced and desired of ALL electric bicycles...2017 Stromer ST2 S Class 3 Electric bike in a size Large frame. This is a 1 owner bike with just 178.3 total miles. There is no arguing that this E-Bike is a great car replacement option but at ,000 MSRP was simply out of the reach of most. But now it can be had for half it's original price! It's battery pumps out nearly 1 kilowatt of juice into a 500w electric motor. What this means is 42 newton meters of torque is applied to the rear wheel which is way more then most E-bike's on the market. This bike truly accelerates like a car and does a damn fair impression of a small displacement motorcycle! Class 3 E-bikes max out at 28mph but this bike has been known to creep above that manufacturer claimed number and I have personally seen 31.7mph with my own motivated input! Stromer says this bike will do up to 120 miles on a single charge and will do roughly 40 using full assist all the time. Most E-Bikes can't achieve half that in the real world and do not come anywhere near this bikes max cruising speed.
This bike has so many jaw dropping tech details and I don't claim to know all of them but here is a quick run down of what I do know...
The bike has a built in touch screen integrated into the top tube. (Cool!) It actually has a lock screen (just like your smart phone) and you can set it up in such a way that it requires a 4 digit passcode (of your choosing) to unlock the bike. (whoa!) Once powered up the "Sun from the gods" headlight ignites. That headlight puts out 1250 lumens! Is that bright? Uh, well, compare that to other e-bikes at around 125 - 165 lumens. And yes, the headlight has high and low beam at the push of a handlebar mounted button.
There are a number of menus and sub-menus that operate everything from the bikes inner workings to it's security.
As for said riding experience... well as all the reviews of this bike have already stated, it is a remarkable achievement in the world of e-bikes. As one review put it: " If Elon Musk had built an e-bike it would be this e-bike." It's speed, build quality and attention to detail is something you are more accustomed seeing with products from Mercedes-Benz or Porsche. The bike has some ingenious touches like when you brake it engages the regen braking putting juice back into the battery. And the battery can be charged on or off the bike. Mounted to the handlebars are the two brake levers that operate the huge twin pot hydraulic disc brakes front and rear as well as buttons that help you control assist and headlight function. These buttons can also allow you to choose the regen level on the fly!
The drivetrain is based on Shimano's outstanding Di2 electronic shifting which means instant shifts from it's XTR rear derailleur and wide-range 40-11t rear cassette. This gearing matched up to the massive on-board power means this bike makes a mockery of any hill. I myself took this bike up a big grade near our shop and it held 27.1mph!... up hill!... IN ONE OF THE BIKES HARDEST GEARS! Physics no longer apply.
The bike sports Continental Top Contact 2.0 tires on 26" wheels and comfort grip handlebar grips that are more comfortable on long journeys then standard grips. One of the big upgrades to this bike is the 5 in Brooks bling! The Brooks B67 saddle as well as Brooks Brick Lane Panniers and Brooks Gleenbrook saddle bag are huge add on's to this particular bicycle. In the past I have been hit or miss on some Brooks saddles. They are known to take some time to break in and get comfortable. Like a horse saddle. But not this B67. It is comfortable right from the get go. Those large springs out back and the leather shell act like a suspension system. Really great. And the Brooks Gleenbrook (used as a saddle bag in the pictures) can also used as a handlebar bag by simply strapping it to the bars. Combined the onboard storage is nearly 34 liters worth! And that Brooks quality matches this bikes vibe perfectly.
The aluminum frame was engineered to be incredibly strong and able to handle this bikes main purpose as an all encompassing transportation solution. It's strong frame and super-sized drivetrain mean this bikes 57lb weight is more then most lesser E-bikes but that was by design. Stromer wanted to build not just a "bicycle" but rather a personal transportation solution and that involved rethinking what an E-bike could be. It was more important that the bike performed a certain way then for it to compete at a certain weight. This meant the motor and power source had to be of a certain specification as did the brakes and human powered drivetrain. Did Stromer meet their goal Boy did they! Although this bikes owner hardly ride this bike you can tell with the first pedal stroke just how advanced this bike is when compared to other E-bikes. It just sails down the road making you feel like you could ride forever.
Bike is in outstanding condition with almost no signs of use. Tires look like they haven't turned a mile and the bikes frame and components show no noticeable blemishes. The only cosmetic imperfections I can find is some small marks to the top tube from the brake levers making contact when fully turned. The bike has 2G cellular connectivity which is no longer being supported by cellular networks so if the new owner wants the bicycle to have it's full suite of features such as being able to lock or unlock the bike remotely from your phone you would have to have the bicycle upgraded to 3G connectivity via Stromer or a Stromer authorized retailer. I spoke with Stromer about this and they confirmed that the bicycle will operate as a fully functional E-bike with or without cellular network capabilities. It has no impact of the bikes charging, range, lock/unlock or functionality other then the fact your cell phone is not connected to the bicycle and Stromer can't track your bicycle in the event of theft. But if you upgrade the bike to 3G capabilities you can lock and unlock the bike remotely and if the bicycle is stolen it has anti theft measures to help lock out it's use by would-be thieves.
Charging - It supposedly takes 6 hours to charge from dead but from speaking with the owner the bike has never fallen below about 50% state of charge. It's been well cared for and is just beginning it's life as a super commuter for somebody. What an extraordinary opportunity to get one of the most amazing bicycles currently on the market. A triumph of Swiss engineering.
Frame size is a Large with a 58.2cm (23" inch) top tube length. Standover height is 32.25 inches. This bike will best fit riders in the 5' 9" - 6' 1" range.
